Meeting the Badger
He's quite often in the garden but sometimes not so easy to find.
He actually likes his solitude and can become rather grumpy if disturbed too frequently.
If not in the garden, the Badger can be found at bowls. A champion bowler of some repute, he juggles his time between garden duties and bowls brilliance.
He is loyal, quite cuddly and is very fond of refreshments.

No rest for a Badger
It's a miracle he keeps going really. The Badger didn't really want 5 acres to care for - or even a garden really - but there he is, buzzing around on his ride-on mower creating a parkland under the trees for all of us to enjoy.
Of course, what he (and we) didn't realise was that the mowing is the easy part - it's the collecting of the sticks and branches and debris that happens before the mowing that is the back-breaker.
Still, he perseveres until red-faced and dehydrated, water-bottle at his side and a smile of satisfaction at every bit of paddock conquered.
Thank goodness for the kindness of Badger.

A reprieve for the Badger
He's been very quiet of late. Not really grumpy but just a little introverted. There was a moment of delighted full facial smile late last Saturday evening as he munched into the large Humpty Dumpty Easter Egg - a gift from the son. But it was short-lived and didn't rely on sound.
It's probably to do with my mother although I am not blaming her exactly. It's just not so easy for Badger to get much of a word in when Mother is around.
Known as Cecily (long story and not her real name), living alone does seem to bring out the talkative in her when she finds herself amongst a captured / captive audience. And it's not that the Badger doesn't try. It's just that he is a little slower on the uptake than most so although his mouth may be poised in readiness, by the time the words have got to the 'coming out stage', Cecily has commenced another conversation - or is repeating one from yesterday. The hardest part is finding a response to Cecily when she asks if Badger is alright. "He seems awfully quiet," she says.
Cecily has now been sent home on the train - and two visits in two weeks was somewhat unprecedented. Badger is back at bowls today leaving at 8am for a 1pm game being held in a location about 45 minutes away. Guess he was keen for some space - and a few beers with the boys.
